Must read

Sadie Myers, a mother of four, has opened up about a recent tragic incident. For example, she announced in a message on Facebook that she found her four-year-old twins lifeless in a wooden toy box. Sadie thought her children were, as they often are, playing with each other in the morning. However, her son discovered that they had locked themselves in an ultimately fatal place. She shares her story to protect others from a similar scenario.

‘TWIN THING’

Aurora and Kellan Star passed away on August 25. The pair were put to bed by their father to sleep the night before. Mother Sadie came home from work late that evening and checked on her children before eating her dinner and going to bed herself.

The following day, the twins would have woken up early in the morning to go play. “They did that before, and it’s really a ‘twin thing’. According to Sadie, her children normally fall back asleep on their own afterwards. “Often in a strange place in their room with toys everywhere.” Sadie hadn’t realized that there was a location in the room where her children would be better off not falling asleep. “On Friday night, the crazy place where they cuddled up was their big cedar toy chest, where we normally put all their stuffed animals. But then something terrible happened.”

DIED IN TOY BOX

While sleeping, the lid of the wooden box would have somehow closed. “Probably one of them must have moved or kicked. Something I didn’t know, and I’m sure many others didn’t either, is that some wooden toy boxes, once closed, are both airtight and soundproof.” The twins are said to have subsequently died. “As they slept, huddled together, little by little, they ran out of oxygen,” said Sadie, who believes her children did not suffer. “They probably fell asleep peacefully.”

FOUND BY BROTHER

On the day of the incident, Sadie had been panicking all morning, looking for her 4-year-old twins. She only saw her two eldest boys playing outside and did not find the youngest in their bed. Eventually, her son Axton discovered that his brother and sister were in the toy box. The unsuspecting child did not realize the seriousness of the matter at the time. “Mommy, I found them. They are so crazy: they are sleeping in the toy trunk,” he shouted. Sadie knew immediately that something was wrong. She would like to remind others to be careful with heavy wooden boxes. “Hopefully, this will prevent even more children from dying unnecessarily.”

GREAT SADNESS

Sadie cannot contain her grief. Since the event was announced, she has been posting photos of and messages to her deceased children several times a day. She, therefore, feels guilty and feels that she has failed as a mother because of the tragic event. Her sister, Deanna Myers, has started a GoFundMe page to support the family. “This is the most terrible and painful thing a parent, brother or sister can experience,” she explains. To date, $40,000 has already been raised.

ACCIDENT OR CRIME

The Jacksonville Police Department in Florida also responded to the incident. They said in a statement that they are conducting an investigation. “We are working with our coroner’s partners to determine the cause of death. At this time, we do not know if this was an accident or if foul play was committed. In any case, no one has been charged to date.”
