The news that a golden Buddha statue and other sacred objects will be placed this week in a pagoda in the Dhamma Chedi Museum in Udon Thani went viral among Thai internet users.
The 50.5 kilogram Buddha statue is made of 99.99 percent gold and is worth about 100 million baht, according to press reports.
According to a source, the museum is currently waiting for the statue to be delivered from a factory in Bangkok. They clarified that the gold figure has nothing to do with the gold donation project launched after the 1997 financial crisis.
According to the museum website, construction of the Dhamma Chedi Museum is 80-90 percent complete.
The province’s newest museum in the northeast will commemorate one of Thailand’s most famous monks, Luangta Maha Bua Yannasampanno, who died on January 31, 2011 at the age of 98.
