It all looks worse than it is, but surprisingly the driver walked away unharmed. A pickup truck loaded with durian fruit crashed into a utility pole on the highway yesterday morning after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The man from Phang Nga was driving on Highway 41 in the Thung Song district of the southern province when “Klaas Veel” threw sand in his eyes and fell asleep, causing him to lose control of the pickup truck. The pickup truck smashed head-on into a utility pole that immediately flipped over, sending the pickup trunk full of giant fruit over the highway as the car rolled over.
When the crashing car finally came to a stop, it was perpendicular to the ground, leaning on its nose and leaning against a lamppost on the side of the road. The dramatic photos look like an accident that would certainly cause fatalities.
But when police arrived at the scene of the accident, they were surprised to find the 24-year-old driver of the pickup truck next to his inverted vehicle, virtually untouched in the accident. After the collision, he was able to free himself from the wreckage and climb out of the truck unassisted.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for a thorough examination to make sure there were no physical injuries, but the man insisted he was feeling well.
According to local police, the driver said he had driven north from the deep southern province of Yala to transport his cargo of durian to Chumphon. During the long trek he had become drowsy and eventually fell asleep at the wheel. He was awakened from his sleep by the impact itself and was able to walk away from the crash with only a few scratches.
