Four children who crashed a plane in the jungle of Colombia on May 1 were found yesterday after a month-long search. All four, including a baby, are still alive. This was announced by President Gustavo Petro yesterday. The exhausted children were taken to the capital Bogota for medical examination.

MOTHER AND PILOT DECEASED

Considering their young ages, it is a true miracle that the four children survived the crash. They were thirteen, nine, four, and only eleven months old at the time of the crash. On May 1, the young children were boarding a small plane with their mother bound for San José del Guaviare in central Colombia when it suddenly disappeared from radar. The accident immediately killed three adults: the children’s mother and two pilots.

QUEST

After the plane disappeared from radar, several auxiliary troops were immediately called in. Soldiers, firefighters and civil aviation employees searched for the children for more than a month. A photo shows how they found the children after more than a month of searching.

EATING PLANTS

During the search, there were sometimes clues that gave hope that the children were still alive. For example, some of their belongings and a partially eaten apple were found in the area a few days after the crash.

The Spanish newspaper El País writes that the older children in particular, knew the jungle well and which plants they could eat and could not. This is how the children probably managed to keep themselves alive for a long time.

JOY FOR THE WHOLE COUNTRY

President Petro himself shared the news of the rescue with the media. “A joy for the whole country! The four children who went missing in the Colombian jungle 40 days ago have been found alive,” he begins his statement. “They are weakened. But let the doctors make their diagnoses before we talk about that. They were alone; they made it on their own. It is an example of extreme survival that will go down in history.”

MEDICAL CARE

According to The Washington Post, the children are currently receiving medical care and will soon be transferred to San José del Guaviare, the capital of the Guaviare department. There they will receive further treatment and aftercare.
