Old 6-storey apartment building in Nonthaburi collapses, two construction workers injured
Two construction workers were injured on Prachachuen Road of the main district yesterday afternoon when two uninhabited buildings slated for demolition collapsed.
The incident was reported to the police at about 2.30 pm. The two buildings were known as the “Wanpaka Complex”. The complex was five hectares and consisted of an eight-storey building and an associated six-storey building with a swimming pool.
The Wanpaka Building was originally mainly occupied by alien tenants until the complex was abandoned and cleared for demolition. The construction company Interyota Ltd. was awarded the contract for the demolition work.
Police Lieutenant General Jirapat Phumjit, commissioner of the provincial police in Region 1, told the press that demolition work had reached the foundation when the building suddenly collapsed.
At the time of the accident, 20 workers were working on the construction site with six backhoe loaders. Two workers were injured, including one who was trapped in his backhoe when the vehicle was struck by a large concrete beam. Rescue workers pulled the man from the rubble around 5:30 p.m.
Police have announced an investigation to clarify the cause of the collapse.
