Pattaya’s beggar problem has not disappeared after the reopening of the city, in fact, it has become more extensive.
Despite the efforts of social welfare organizations to take beggars to homeless shelters and the police to tackle people-smuggling gangs, it is still easy to trace people begging in the city.
While walking along South Road on March 8, a woman with a baby – perhaps not even her baby – was asked by passersby for money. Some passers-by feel sorry and feel obliged to hand them a few baht.
Not far from this beggar, a gruff-looking man sat on the sidewalk, beer in hand, watching the scene, warning them to run when law enforcement shows up.
