In the Somali town of Qoryoley, several people died yesterday when a mortar shell exploded. A group of children had found the grenade and started playing with it. At least 27 people were killed and 53 injured in the tragic accident. Almost all victims are children.
A group of children had found the explosive at a popular football field in the area. When they started playing with the grenade, it exploded. Some of the children died instantly, others were taken to hospital with minor to life-threatening injuries. The victims are said to be mainly between 10 and 15 years old.
After many questions about why the grenade was there, the governor of the region has come out with a statement. He states that the recent rainfall probably exposed the explosive. The mortar shell was probably left behind by the radical Islamic terrorist organization al-Shabaab.
Al Shabaab has been fighting the government since 2007 and has been carrying out major attacks for years. Al-Shabaab still has a lot of power, especially in the countryside. Last night, the terror group committed another attack on a popular restaurant in the Somali capital Mogadishu. At least seven people were injured.
