A Thai monk chopped off his own head with a guillotine in the hope that through his sacrifice to Buddha he would reincarnate as a ‘higher spiritual being’.
Phra Thammakorn Wangpreecha, 68, was found dead on April 15 in Wat Phu Hin temple in northeastern Thailand. The monk used a makeshift guillotine set up next to a Buddha statue so that the religious figure appeared to be holding his head after it was cut off.
The monk believed that offering the sacrifice to the deity would bring him happiness in the afterlife.
Despite some followers admiring Thammakorn’s act, the local government tries to explain to residents in the area that such a practice is not encouraged in the Buddhist religion.
