The capital Bangkok plans special lanes for motorcyclists

To reduce the high number of accidents in Bangkok, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to build additional motorcycle lanes on the main roads, the head of the BMA traffic department, Prapas Lueangsirinapha, told the press.

The official said the BMA hopes to reduce road injuries and deaths to zero by 2032 as part of Bangkok’s long-term infrastructure upgrades.

“The fast-paced lifestyle and reckless behaviour of city dwellers, especially motorcyclists, is the main cause of most accidents on Bangkok’s roads,” he continued.

“Motorcycles are the most frequently involved in road accidents, so we propose to create special lanes for motorcycles to reduce the risk of accidents,” said Prapas.

As part of a pilot project, motorcycle lanes are to be constructed from Lan Luang Road via Ratchadamnoen Avenue to Somdet Phra Pinklao Bridge, as this stretch of road is large enough to accommodate two dedicated lanes for buses and motorcycles.

If the pilot shows that the idea works, the agency will expand the project to other streets in Bangkok.
