Today September 24, all Thai government offices, including immigration, will be closed in observance of Mahidol Day

Today, September 24, 2021, is Mahidol Day in Thailand. As a result, all government offices, especially the Immigration Department, will be closed for one day. However, it is a national holiday, so the sale of alcohol is allowed. (Although unfortunately bars are still legally closed across the country in Pattaya and Thailand, so only buying from a shop and taking home is allowed.)

What does Mahidol day actually stand for?

This day commemorates the passing of Prince Father Mahidol Adulyadej, the “Father of Thai Modern Medicine”. He was the father of King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) and the great King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand, and the paternal grandfather of the current King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X).

The Ministry of Health normally organizes this day with special activities and medical professionals and doctors normally celebrate the day with special events. Many people also participate in special service days to assist the community in memory of his contributions. However, due to the current Covid-19 situation in Thailand, it is likely that events will be significantly downsized or moved online. Regardless, the day will be considered important by many Thais, especially those in the medical field, for its contributions to human health.

As Thailand’s medical staff continues to fight Covid-19, the day will likely be seen as doubly important by many in the health sector this year.
