What to do if your antigen test (ATK) gives a positive Covid19 result?

Must read

Having ATKs in the house has become the norm in Thailand this week after many people travelled across the country to meet friends and family during the recent New Year’s holiday.

The Thai health service expects the number of Covid19 infections to increase, and some areas such as Bangkok and Phuket have even prepared facilities to accommodate patients.

But suppose……..your antigen test shows you are Covid19 positive, your news bear tells you:

  • Confirm the result with an RT-PCR test

Those who test positive for Covid-19 on a rapid antigen test, or ATK, should take an RT-PCR test to confirm infection. The Thai government only recognizes positive RT-PCR tests as confirmed Covid-19 infections.

  • Contact Thai health authorities

According to the Thai Emergency Order, those who test positive for Covid-19 should contact public health officials. Those who do not report positive results can expect a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

  1. Contact the National Health Security Office by phone or through their official Line account at 1330.
  2. Patients covered by the social security system should call hotline 1506, press 6. In urgent or severe cases, contact hotline 1668 or Line @ 1668.reg to reserve a hospital bed.
  • Inquire about home insulation

Covid-19-infected people who refuse to quarantine or undergo treatment face up to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to 40,000 baht. Patients with severe symptoms are hospitalized, while others may be sent to a field hospital or community isolation centre, where the government pays for the hospitality and basic treatment costs.

But for ex-pats and travellers, the thought of being sent to a field hospital or isolation centre abroad can be daunting, but those who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms may be admitted for home isolation.

To be eligible for home isolation, the patient must be under the age of 65 and must not have any health problems that would expose them to serious infections. They must also be asymptomatic or have mild symptoms and have a habitat to isolate themselves from others. Travellers to Thailand can be quarantined at an approved hotel at their own expense.
