44-year-old Thai man dies after being run over by train in Chonburi, police believe victim was drunk

Yesterday, a 44-year-old man was pronounced dead at the track in Phan Thong District after being run over by a train.

Phan Tong police were notified at 9:50 am of the accident, which occurred near a temple in Kok Keenon sub-district.

She and rescuers arrived on the scene and found the body of 44-year-old Kampan Chaochengyuen lying on the rails. He had suffered serious injuries from being run over by a train.

A little further on, a bowl of half-eaten noodles was found near his body, leading police to suspect that Khun Kampan had been eating on the train tracks prior to the accident. The train came to a stop about 300 meters away.

A guard, Mr Songkran Sornnarain, 58, who was present nearby, told Phan Thong police: “I saw the shirtless man walking near my security booth with a bowl of noodles. He was on the track and started eating his breakfast, despite me warning him of the dangers of such action.”

“A train started coming, as I had warned and started blaring a horn to warn Kampan. At the time, Kampan was lying on the ground, using the railway as a pillow for his head when he was hit. The victim was not a local resident, I had never seen him before. I often yelled at him to get out of here, but I didn’t listen.” So declared Songkran.

The train’s 41-year-old driver Raewat Sriarj, 41, told Phan Thong police: “I saw something on the railway as I approached the area where the incident took place. It was difficult to identify from afar, as the man was not wearing a shirt and the man was lying. I tried to honk, but the victim didn’t respond, possibly drunk as he lay on the track, using the track as a pillow for his head. I managed to stop the train, but it took some time and I couldn’t avoid hitting the man.”

Phan Thong police believe the incident was not a suicide and the victim was likely heavily intoxicated. They said they are investigating the incident.
