In a crackdown at the end of the weekend, Mae Hong Son police arrested 53 foreigners allegedly carrying out a fraudulent investment plan, the Royal Thai Police said, RTP said.

The RTP spokesman said police had learned that several foreigners had entered Thailand illegally and settled at the Ban Rak Thai resort in Mae Hong Son’s Muang district.

Locals had notified the police of the group over concerns that they could potentially be Covid19 spreaders.

Police investigated the group for more than a month before the raid began. The police station said the group had booked the entire resort and even hired some locals to act as bodyguards.

Of the 53 arrested, 40 are Chinese citizens, 12 are from Myanmar and one is a Filipino. Police also seized more than 300 phones, computers and other assets.

Aside from fraud, 52 of the detainees were charged with illegally entering Thailand, while one was charged with staying too long.

Police also found boxes of cigarettes and stocks of playing cards illegally smuggled into the country.
