The Minister of Transport, Khun Saksayam Chidchob describes the introduction of the new speed limit of 120 kilometres per hour on a test route as a success.
Critics had argued that the new speed limit would lead to more road accidents because the Thai population and speed simply don’t mix.
A video conference between the minister and local experts over the weekend showed that there were no problems on the 45.9 km test route between Ayutthaya and Ang Thong on the Asia Highway. It is a dual carriageway and only the outer carriageway is allowed to drive at 120 kilometres per hour.
The enthusiastic Khun Saksayam now plans to introduce the new speed limit on many other roads: by August at 138.22 km of six roads – this includes another part of the Asia Highway, part in Pathum Thani, Route 2, Route 304 and Route 34.
By the end of the year, there are still six road sections covering 88 kilometres. And from 2022 to 2028, the plan is to introduce the limit of 120 on parts of 47 additional roads.
