Patanavanich, of the Department of Community Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital, announced that according to one nationwide US study, the use of e-cigarettes may more than double the risk of erectile dysfunction.
According to the nationwide study of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health, the study was conducted among 13,711 men in the United States between 2016-2018, those who use e-cigarettes are 2.5 times more likely to have erectile dysfunction than non-smokers.
Patanavanich said the study found that nicotine and other chemicals found in e-cigarette liquids negatively affect the male sex hormone, testosterone.
Thai President of the Smoking and Health Action Foundation, Dr Prakit Vathesatogkit, said research in Australia found that people who smoke one pack of cigarettes a day have a 40% higher risk of erectile dysfunction.
In addition, under Thai law, e-cigarette importers can face up to 10 years in prison while selling e-cigarette liquids can result in sellers being jailed for up to five years or fined as little as 500,000 baht.
