According to Bangkok police, the use of tear gas was ‘standard procedure’ during last Sunday’s pro-democracy protests

Police insist they followed procedures in their violent crackdown on anti-government protesters last Sunday. Police fired water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters, 16 of whom were arrested during the demonstrations.

Fourteen of those arrested were guards, while two were detained for throwing flaming torches at police officers.

Among those arrested was Mr Thanadech Srisongkram better known as “Mon”, he was wanted for participating in a meeting outside the Ministry of Health in Nonthaburi on July 16.

General Piya Tawichai, the deputy. The Metropolitan Police Bureau commander stated that the police had used appropriate strategies to prevent further damage and violence during the protest. Officers continuously warned those present during the demonstration, he added.

“The tear gas used by international standards last Sunday can cause pain to the skin and body,” Piya said the gas is more effective when used in an enclosed area, such as the Panichayakarn junction.

Eight police officers were injured, six of whom were treated in hospital. The number of injured protesters is still unknown, General Piya said.

Police are collecting evidence for arrest warrants for more than 10 protesters, he added.
