American charged with smuggling 3 large phytons in his pants

Calvin Bautista, 36, from New York, faces years in prison for smuggling three Burmese phytons at a US-Canadian border crossing. The man had hidden the snakes in his pants during a bus ride that crossed the US-Canada border.

When the bus arrived at the Canadian border, Bautista was shocked by a very thorough check. His loved ones snakes were discovered in his trouser legs. To take the pythons across the border, you need a permit and the man didn’t have one. He was then arrested.

It is not known how the man managed to control the snakes during the long bus ride. Burmese phytons can grow up to 5 meters in length and are considered ‘harmful to humans. It is not known what the length of the smuggled animals was or what the condition of the snakes was after the turbulent bus journey.

The smuggling attempt took place in 2018, but the lawsuit was only heard this week. The man was arraigned yesterday but has since been released pending further trial. Bautista can face a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine of USD 250,000 (about EUR 256,000).
