At least 84 dead in severe storm in Brazil

At least 84 people have been killed in severe storms in Brazil. Especially in the state of Pernambuco, in the northeast of the country, there is heavy rainfall. This causes flooding and landslides. Dozens of people are still missing.

A state of emergency has been declared in at least fourteen cities. Video footage shows how water and debris flows through the streets and people have to cling to homes. Buildings are also collapsing due to the landslides. Rescuers are still searching for people under the rubble.

More than 4,000 people have already had to leave their homes due to the severe weather and more rain is expected in the coming days. President Bolsonaro has said that the army has been deployed to help and that EUR 200 million has been released for emergency aid.

In northeast Brazil, more than 200 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours in some places. That is about a quarter of what falls in a whole year in the Netherlands. This type of severe weather is more common in Brazil. For example, in the southeast, near Rio de Janeiro, more than 200 people were killed by storms in February and at least 14 people died in mudslides in April.
