The office of the Royal Thai Society has announced a change in the official name of Thailand’s capital from “Bangkok” to “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon”.
However, the name ‘Bangkok’ will continue to be recognised by officials, the Thai Public Broadcasting Service reported.
Thailand’s Cabinet has approved the change of the capital’s name, but the new official name will only take effect after a committee in charge of reviewing bills with additional comments from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The name “Bangkok” has been in use in Thailand since November 2001. It comes from the name of Bangkok’s old district, which is now part of the greater metropolitan area, Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai districts.
The Royal Thai Society of Thailand office statement also gave the official Thai spelling for some other cities, namely the Thai names for Kuala Lumpur, Rome, Nay Pyi Taw, Kathmandu, as well as the Thai spelling of the State of Palestine.
