Survivor of Thai cave rescue soccer team captain killed in accident in England

One of 12 boys rescued during a rescue operation in a Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand nearly five years ago has died in an accident in the United Kingdom, where he went to study at a soccer academy, the Khaosod newspaper reported.

Supatpong Metigo, a Buddhist monk and the boy’s former teacher, made the news on social media this morning. The monk wrote that the boy’s accidental death was reported by his grandmother, who gives him alms every morning.

Duangpetch “Dom” Promtep fell and hit his head on the ground in England. First aid was attempted, but Dom died shortly thereafter, the publication reported.

Last August, Duangpetch “Dom” Promtep, 17, said his “dream came true” when he was offered a soccer scholarship to Brook House College’s soccer academy in Leicester.

“Today my dream came true. I’m going to study soccer in England. I would like to thank you for giving me this opportunity. Thank you Brook House College Soccer Academy for providing scholarships to promote soccer for provincial kids like me, thank you for supporting important opportunities in life,” Dom wrote on social media.

On June 23, 2018, 12 members of the Wild Boars soccer team, ages 11 to 16, were trapped in a flooded cave system in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district along with their 25-year-old soccer coach, Nopparat Kanthawong.

At the time, Dom, 13, was captain of the Boars’ team. There was no contact with the team for two weeks. On July 2, two British divers miraculously found the group alive in the cave, but the hardest part was yet to come — getting the children out of the narrow, flooded cave system.

In an international rescue operation involving 10,000 people that shocked the world, all 12 boys and their coach were brought out of the cave alive between July 8 and 10. The mission ended 18 days after the team went missing.

The Tham Luang Cave Mission inspired three films: The Cave (2019), Rescue (2021), and Thirteen Lives (2022).

In his publication, Supatpong Metigo, a Buddhist monk and the boy’s former teacher, wrote:

“Dom’s grandmother came to offer food to the monks and informed them that Dom had passed away. His home was near the temple. Dom was a good child who learned well and wrote well. He was very good at reciting Buddhist prayers and often received our praise.”

“When Dom was stuck in a cave, his grandmother gave us alms every day and prayed for a miracle. After being rescued from the cave, Dom went to Chiang Mai to play sports. He then received a scholarship to further his studies in England.”

“May the soul of Duangpet ‘Dom’ Promthep rest in good peace. The peace you desire. I hope the Dharma you have been taught accompanies you everywhere, and I hope that in a future life you will be my disciple again.”
