According to a science teacher from Chulalongkorn University, using a fan and setting the air conditioning to a maximum of 27° Celsius will save you a pretty penny!
Science teacher Jessada Denduangboripant agreed with the Ministry of Energy’s advice that this move could cut electricity bills by 10 to 30 percent. The teacher spoke up after the advice sparked controversy on social media.
The ministry explained that combining a fan with air conditioning increases airflow and lowers the temperature by 2 degrees. This method saves more electricity than using an air conditioner at 23-24°C, he added.
Jessada supported the advice, saying he often used the fan-and-air-conditioning method. He explained that the air conditioning compressor does not have to work as hard when a temperature is set.
Lowering the temperature in the room to 27°C will lower the humidity to a comfortable level, he said. Meanwhile, turning on a fan will make the room cooler as the airflow helps the body dissipate heat.
In addition, a fan consumes much less power than an air conditioner. If you set it to maximum — or even turn on two or three fans — it still uses less power than an air conditioner, says Khun Jessada.
He also suggested cleaning the air conditioner and filter regularly.
