Chaiphol Wipha, the suspect in the infamous ‘Nong Chompoo’ murder case, has been released on bail on conditions including a ban on travel abroad, his lawyer announced to the press yesterday.

The village chief of Ban Kok Toom has been appointed to ensure that Chaiphol strictly adheres to the conditions, the court said.

Chaiphol, 44, is facing multiple charges over the death of his three-year-old niece last year. He was flown from Bangkok to Kok Toom Police Station to officially file the charges that same day.

Little “Nong Chompoo” was found dead on a mountain near Ban Kok Kork in Mukdahan’s Dong Luang district last May.

The ensuing investigation into her death turned into a media frenzy, with her uncle briefly achieving celebrity status because some people believed he was wrongly suspected of the crime.

Chaiphol has so far denied the allegations.
