A suspected hitman has been shot and killed by police in the southern province of Chumphon, police say he was the most wanted assassin in the region.

The gunfight also killed a 16-year-old boy, and another man was injured during an escape attempt.

The 43-year-old hitman from Nakhon Si Thammarat had four arrest warrants for four different murder cases to his name. Police heard he was hiding in a mountain cabin in Chumphon. Police had to drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle up the mountain road and then travel another mile before reaching the hideout.

In the ensuing shootout, the hitman and a 16-year-old boy were killed. A 26-year-old man broke his leg running away from the police. He fell and rolled about 100 yards down the hill. He was subsequently arrested by the police. The agents confiscated an M16 rifle, M26 grenades and a 9mm pistol, as well as ammunition.
