Dozens of cars with false license plates have been seized in Northeast Thailand

Police seized 42 cars in Isaan yesterday with fake license plates, tax stamps, and other registration papers.

The seizures took place in eight provinces, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Yasothon, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani, the region 3 provincial police commander announced last night.

Police Lieutenant General Somprasong Yenthuam said police seized 42 cars with fake number plates, tax stamps and registration papers for verification during the recent actions. Forty-three people were arrested for alleged use of false documents and forgery.

The action followed a crackdown on forgers of official documents in Bangkok by the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

Police General Somprasong said the fake license plates, stickers and documents were found on vehicles used to deliver drugs, illegally harvested protected timber and other illegal goods. They were also used for other crimes. The vehicles were largely acquired by the gangs through fraud, customs evasion and on the black market.

A set of false documents for a car cost about 15,000 baht on the black market, police Lieutenant General Somprasong said.
