Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzman is having a hard time in his maximum-security US prison. The Mexican drug lord complains about the “cruel and unfair” conditions and has asked Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for help.

El Chapo has been serving his life sentence in a maximum-security prison in Colorado since 2017. This after he previously managed to escape from two prisons in Mexico. The drug lord has asked his lawyer José Refugio Rodríguez to contact Mexican President López Obrador in the hope that he will be transferred to a Mexican prison.

El Chapo’s lawyer recently told radio station Por la mañana: “He does not get to see the sun, the food is of poor quality and there is no health care. He had a problem with his teeth and instead of treating him for it, they were pulled out so he wouldn’t whine anymore.” In addition, according to Refugio Rodríguez, his client has only been allowed to make six to seven calls since March 2022.

President López Obrador said in a press conference on Wednesday that he would consider El Chapo’s request for a transfer to Mexico. “You always have to keep the door open when it comes to human rights,” he said.

Earlier this month, El Chapo’s son Ovidio Guzmán was arrested. After the arrest, fighting broke out in the Mexican city of Culiacán between members of the Sinaloa Cartel and the National Guard. At least seven security forces were killed. Ovidio Guzmán has been held in a maximum-security Mexican prison since his arrest.
