Foreign students fleeing Ukraine say they face segregation, racism at border

You can hardly have missed the messages on social media about discrimination and racism on the Ukrainian border. Human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) has confirmed that reporting is correct.

In the report published Friday, HRW writes that refugees from Ukraine who do not have Ukrainian nationality are more difficult to get out of the country. Refugees with an African or Indian background are particularly opposed in their attempts to cross the border.

The human rights organization talked to dozens of people, including a lot of students. There are about 80,000 international students enrolled in educational institutions in Ukraine. They mainly come from countries such as India, Morocco, Nigeria, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

The students say they were prevented from accessing trains and buses. They were systematically forced to give way to Ukrainians and were sometimes even beaten. “Ukrainian authorities should not discriminate on the basis of nationality or race. Neighboring countries should admit everyone, with as little hassle as possible,” says Human Rights Watch.
