Gambling debts drive a Thai woman in Chonburi to suicide
A 39-year-old Chonburi resident has hanged herself after losing a bet she placed on a gambling website.
Police arrived at the house in the Nong Sam Sak area of Ban Bung district and saw Wanwisa Samart hanging from the ceiling. No suspicious circumstances were found.
Her 40-year-old husband, Alongkorn Dubrok, said his wife went to the bedroom after dinner, but when he went to her, he found the door locked. So he stepped out to look through the window and saw her hanging there.
He told reporters that his wife suffered from depression and had previously attempted suicide after losing the 5,000 baht government subsidy for gambling.
Gambling is a serious problem in Thailand and many operators promote it through spam.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has ordered cellular service operators to block all spam messages beginning yesterday. Texts that should be blocked are not only related to gambling, but also from moneylenders and pornographic websites.
