The husband of teacher Irma Garcia, one of the teachers who was killed last Tuesday in the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, has died ‘due to grief’. A family member reported this on Twitter.

“It is with deep sadness that I have to announce that my aunt Irma’s husband has passed away from the effects of grief,” said John Martinez. Martinez reported to the New York Times that the true cause of death was a heart attack. His uncle Joe Garcia visited his wife’s memorial on Thursday morning to lay flowers there. When he got home, Martinez said he “went over almost immediately.” The couple was together for 24 years and leaves behind four children.

Irma Garcia, 46, was one of two teachers killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. They were trying to protect the children in her class when she was shot. Police officers found her in a classroom with children in her arms. “She was always so optimistic about everything and just so sweet to the people in her life,” Martinez said.

At least 21 people were killed in the primary school shooting, including 19 children between the ages of 7 and 10. The 18-year-old gunman, Salvador Ramos, was killed by police. It is still unclear what his motive was for the horrific act.
