In Thailand, a destitute man and his two daughters walked more than 1,000 kilometers in 11 days to find work

The heartbreaking story of a destitute man who walked 1,000 kilometers in 11 days to find a job and feed his two hungry daughters has a happy ending, local media reported.

The unemployed man and his two daughters, ages 10 and 12, began their long and arduous journey from a relative’s home in Satun on Dec. 11. The grueling journey ended 11 days later when the family of three arrived in Rayong on Dec. 22.

The 47-year-old father and the two girls had walked and hitchhiked for more than 11 days because the father could not afford any transportation expenses. Along the way, the father and daughters spent nights at gas stations and temples until they arrived in Rayong, where they met a man from Plouak Daeng’s rescue team, Sarawut Pummarin.

Sarawut told local media that he had received information from a motorcycle cab driver who had informed the rescue team of a family wandering along the road and clearly stranded. The kind motorcyclist asked rescuers from the Plouak Daeng team to help the poor family.

The rescuers found the family near a shopping mall in the Plouak Daeng area. Sarawut quickly took up the cause: finding a room for the family to live in, a job for the father at a construction site, and managing to find a school for the two girls.

An emotional Norraphat wept while speaking to Thai media on Sunday, Dec. 25. The man said he used to be a fisherman and sang in several restaurants and bars in Satun and Phuket, where he met his wife. However, they separated five years ago, and since then Norrafat has been unable to contact her and is raising his minor daughters alone.

After losing his job, the man moved in with his sister but then decided to go looking for work because he feared his children would starve and be unable to study. However, Norrafat was overwhelmed by the support and thanked everyone for helping the family start a new life.

The upbeat father said he wanted to sing again if he got the chance. His daughters also love to sing and have even won several prizes at school, Norrafat added. He hopes his children will have a chance to develop their singing skills in the future.

Noopphana Charoentham, head of the Rayong provincial orphanage for children and families, visited the family last Sunday. Nopphana said the shelter will take care of the family by registering them so the family can settle in the province. The family will also be provided with some basic necessities and a support budget of 3,000 baht.
