In Surat Thani and Phuket, 2 suspected drug lords from Germany have been arrested
Two suspected drug cartel leaders, whose operations were based in Europe, were arrested yesterday in the southern provinces of Surat Thani and Phuket.
According to the chief commissioner of the Thai immigration service, General Sompong Chingduang, it is Herr Alek Karun, of German/Russian descent and Herr Alexander Wolfien, a German citizen.
Alek was arrested in a luxury villa on the island of Koh Phangan, in Surat Thani province. Alexander was arrested on Rawai Beach, Phuket.
The two suspects are said to be the heads of a major drug cartel that supplies drugs to gangs across Europe. Arrest warrants were reportedly issued in their name some time ago and lived under the radar in Thailand for several years, Commissioner Sompong said.
The Thai media reported that the German embassy had asked for Thailand’s cooperation in the arrest and extradition of the suspects to Germany to stand trial.
Commissioner Sompong added that the suspects were living with Russian friends who had to warn them if the police were to look for them, the European fugitives. He concluded his comments by saying that 2 arrest teams had been deployed and that they should “exert great caution” when approaching these drug lords.
