More than 13,000 people have arrived after the first 4 days of Thailand’s reopening, with only 10 travellers testing positive for the Covid19 virus.

According to the director of the Ministry of Health, Dr Sumanee Watcharasin, 13,229 people have entered Thailand in the past 4 days, 10 of these international travellers – only o.o75% of all arrivals in Thailand have been found to have a Covid19 infection so far.

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok was by far the main access point, with nearly 70% of all international arrivals via Thailand’s main hub.

A total of 9,210 people flew to Bangkok, while less than half of those, a total of 4,005 travellers, flew to Phuket International Airport. 182 people were reported to have arrived in Koh Samui.

Some may notice that the government statistics add up to 13,397, which is 168 more people than the total number who reportedly arrived. No direct explanation was given for this discrepancy.

The Department of Health also listed the top 10 countries of origin for travellers entering Thailand, with the US and Germany separated by just 1 traveller:

  • United States – 1,593
  • Germany – 1,592
  • United Kingdom – 1,006
  • Japan – 935
  • Switzerland – 624
  • Sweden – 511
  • South Korea – 499
  • Netherlands – 363
  • United Arab Emirates – 350
  • China – 345

The arrival process has received some mixed reviews, with some saying the RT-PCR testing process was fast, but others reporting long delays. Director Sumanee said the RT-PCR test results were returned within 6 hours, allowing travellers to immediately proceed with their Test & Go or Sandbox programs. But many people post online that they have waited longer for their test results, sometimes even longer than the 1 day it takes in a SHA+ or AQ hotel.

Other more positive reports say the arrival process has been expedited by airline personnel helping to check passengers’ paperwork before landing to ensure they are ready for processing at the landing before heading to their SHA+ hotel for their RT-PCR test.
