Israel will close its borders to foreigners for the next two weeks for fear of the omikron variant of the coronavirus. The country is also once again using technology from the internal security service Shin Bet to detect possible corona infections via telephone data.

Israel is the first country to completely close its borders to the outside world because of the new variant. The measure will come into effect next night. The country hopes that more information will be known about the mutations within two weeks.

In the country, there is so far one known infection with the omikron variant, which may be highly contagious. In addition, seven suspected cases are still under investigation.

Shin Bet also used the location data of mobile phones during the pandemic. In whom the coronavirus was diagnosed at the time, the internal security service checked where the person had been in the fourteen days before.

The government in Israel has also agreed on a new quarantine plan. Israelis who have been fully vaccinated or cured and who have been abroad must self-isolate for 72 hours after arriving in their home country. And if they come from high-risk areas, they must be quarantined in a hotel until they are tested negative.
