A 62-year-old Florida man has been charged after he turned in a rental car with his granddaughter still in the back seat. According to USA Today, the girl was in the back of the car for at least an hour before an employee found the child.

David Towner was asked by his daughter if he could babysit his 1-year-old grandchild for a day. It is not clear what his motives were, but he decided to leave the child at the Daytona Beach International Airport. There he handed in the rental car and was picked up by his daughter, the mother of the child.

On the way back to Towner’s house, his daughter asked where her baby was. Towner told her not to worry. The child would be at home with his roommate. However, upon returning home, it was found that the child was not there and his daughter discovered that Towner had left the baby in the returned rental car.

At about the same time, employees of the car rental company called the police. They had found the child in the car with dried-up tears on her cheeks. “The child was scared and hot, but thankfully in good health when checked by emergency personnel,” a company spokesperson told USA Today. The child was then returned to her mother.

Towner was arrested and charged with child neglect. He was released on bail on payment of $2,500.
