Sattahip police were notified in the evening of this worrying incident, which took place at a telephone tower in front of Samakkee Banpot Temple in Bang Saray.

Police arrived to find a 54-year-old Thai man. The man, who is a volunteer with the police, stood on the 25-meter-high telephone mast and was in emotional distress. His name was not published to the press.

A monk named “Kasem” came from the local temple nearby, he spoke to the man on a cell phone for half an hour before the man agreed to scramble down from the telephone tower.

The man’s son afterwards told the local press: “My father drinks a lot of alcohol every day. During this Covid 19 situation, he is very nervous because he does not have enough money to pay his bills. He is willing to be ordained a monk, which was part of the conversation between him and Kasem over the phone. “
