Thailand reports a seventh confirmed case of monkeypox – woman infected by a foreigner

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control reported on Sunday, August 28, the seventh confirmed case of monkeypox in the country in a Thai woman living in Bangkok who had a sexual relationship with a foreigner but had not traveled abroad during the current spread of the disease.

Dr. Opart Karnkawinpong, the department’s director general, said that about three weeks before she became ill, the 37-year-old unmarried woman visited a nightclub in Bangkok popular with foreigners.

On Aug. 20, she ran a fever. The next day she got a blister on her anus, and another day later other blisters appeared on other parts of her body. She then went to the Bamrasnaradur Institute for Infectious Diseases to seek medical attention.

There, doctors took samples of her skin for real-time polymerase chain reaction tests at the institute and at the Division of Medical Sciences, which confirmed her infection with monkeypox.

Dr. Opart said medical investigators identified three people who were in close physical contact with the woman and placed them under observation with advice to monitor their condition.

The sixth case of monkeypox in Thailand was reported in a 21-year-old Thai woman who worked in a traditional Thai massage parlor in Qatar. She flew back to Thailand on August 21 and returned home to the northeastern province of Maha Sarakham, where she sought treatment.
