A 23-year-old man was seriously injured the day before yesterday when he fell on his motorcycle into a 6-meter-deep hole in the road.

Police were alerted to the accident at the entrance to Soi Ratchadapisek 10 in Huai Khwang district. At the scene, they found a crashed Honda Click motorcycle near a 6-meter-deep gap in the road surface, where municipal works were laying underground cables.

Rescuers used a stretcher and pulley system to lift the victim, Chai (surname not mentioned), from the hole. Doctors discovered he had suffered several serious injuries, including a broken right leg. He was rushed to Paolo Chokechai 4 Hospital for treatment.

Workmen from the municipal works said that part of Ratchadapisek Road was closed every night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. for the laying of underground cables and that they had put up a warning sign about 15 meters in front of the opening.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist was traveling at high speed when he collided with the sign, lost control and tumbled into the hole as his bike slid past it.
