Last night, the world’s most prominent artists came together for the annual MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs, ed.). It is an event full of iconic performances and beautiful moments of recognition for the best music. We have listed your most important winners and most memorable evening moments.

WINNERS

The big winner of the 2023 VMAs was, by far, Taylor Swift. The singer won both the coveted Video of the Year and Song of the Year Awards for her single Anti-Hero. But she also managed to win Show of the Summer, Artist of the Year and Album of the Year with her album Midnights and the accompanying tour.

Furthermore, Nicki Minaj won in the Best Hip-Hop Video category this year with her song Super Freaky Girl, Ice Spice won the Artist to Watch Award, and SZA won Best R&B Video with her song Shirt.

Every year during the VMAs, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and the MTV Video Music Global Icon Award are presented to artists of special status and legacy. This year, we celebrated the career and impact of none other than Shakira with the Video Vanguard and Diddy with the Global Icon Award.

There was also a new award, especially for Afro-beats. For the first time in history, the new MTV Video Music Award for the Best Afrobeats went to Rema and Selena Gomez for their song Calm Down.

SPECIAL NIGHT

In addition to all the awards and looks, it was also an evening full of spectacular performances. The iconic Shakira was honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and performed a medley of her greatest hits. It was certainly a memorable evening for Latina women. Shakira and Karol G won Best Collaboration for their song TQG, and Anitta won Best Latin Video for the second time in a row with her song Funk Rave.

VIRAL

This year, of course, we also had to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. For this, none other than Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh, Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J, Lil Wayne & Darryl ‘DMC”‘ McDaniels came to give a spectacular show. In an epic gathering of living legends, they honoured the anniversary of their genre.

Another viral moment that made everyone in the audience go crazy was when, out of nowhere, boy band NSYNC (featuring Justin Timberlake) appeared on stage for a trip down memory lane. They performed their best-known songs and iconic choreographies.

But that wasn’t the only shine Justin grabbed. Finally, we can’t recap the VMAs 23′ without talking about the viral moment Justin Timberlake and Megan Thee Stallion met. On-screen, it looked like the two artists were having an angry argument with each other, and the internet quickly gave rise to all kinds of rumours and theories. However, according to a source who heard the conversation, nothing could be further from the truth. “He said, ‘It’s so nice to meet you. And she said, ‘No, no, this doesn’t count. This doesn’t count. We need to get acquainted.'” the source said.
