Netflix will soon start a test where it will no longer be possible for people to share their accounts with friends and family. The streaming service wants to charge extra for users outside the specified household. Variety reports that Netflix will initially test this in three countries.

In the coming weeks, Netflix will experiment in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru with charging additional fees when sharing the account outside the household. The streaming service has already included in the terms and conditions that the account is official ‘not to be shared with persons outside the household’, but that is still being condoned to date.

With the test, Netflix wants to move towards a way in which user accounts can be shared ‘simple and safe’, but there is a fee in return. An ‘add an extra member’ button will be visible in the subscription screen. This allows access to two people outside the household, who are given their own profile, log in, and password.

The cost of this account is lower than the cost of a regular Netflix account. In Costa Rica, the user will pay 2.99 dollars (2.71 euros). If the experiment is successful, there is a good chance that the measure will also be introduced in other countries. Netflix is one of the largest streaming services in the world and has more than 220 million subscribers worldwide.
