Almost everyone watches movies and series on Netflix, but how many of them actually pay for Netflix? Few. A recent survey showed that about 34 percent of all Dutch subscribers are watching someone else’s account. The popular streaming platform wants to put an end to this and will therefore charge subscribers who share their password with others outside their household an extra monthly amount from the beginning of next year.

With the new measure, Netflix wants to curb mass account sharing. The additional surcharge has already been tested in five South American countries and the new system will be rolled out worldwide from 2023. Subscribers have to pay a few euros extra per month if others use their login to stream outside their household. Exactly how much that is is not yet known. During the test phase in the South American countries, it was an extra 3 euros per month.

Netflix can “caught” users who share accounts by requiring users to designate a single location as their home address. When the streaming service is used outside that location, the account holder will be charged an extra 3 euros. In the case of a short vacation, the user can use unlimited Netflix for two weeks on devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. After those two weeks you still have to pay a surcharge.
