New Year in Thailand – what will be the restrictions

New Year’s Eve events in Thailand will be held with restrictions on mass gatherings and the sale of alcohol until 1 a.m

New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and some provinces have already announced big events, but the Thai government is reminding people to follow Covid-19 safety rules, including one of the most important restrictions, according to which alcohol can only be served in restaurants until 1 a.m

Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Dr Opas Kankawinpong of the Situation Group on Coronavirus in Thailand reminded people that officials will be strictly enforcing the rules across the country, and especially in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya. Only certified open-air and spacious venues will be allowed to host New Year’s Eve events and serve alcohol on the traditionally lavish holiday.

Restaurants will be subject to the same scrutiny as venues, and only those that follow Covid Free Setting rules and are TSC2+ certified will be allowed to host New Year’s Eve events and serve alcohol. Otherwise, venues will only be allowed to sell alcohol and beer until 11 p.m., which is not very beneficial for a midnight celebration event.

Another tough requirement: To control the number of people gathering at large events, tickets must be issued for admission inside. For gatherings of less than 1,000 people, all attendees must be fully vaccinated with two doses; no additional testing is required before the event.

For New Year’s Eve countdown events with more than 1,000 participants, the rules are even stricter. Again, all participants must be fully vaccinated with at least two injections and must present a negative antigen test 72 hours before the party.

Businesses holding New Year’s Eve Countdown events must also ensure that their firefighting equipment, emergency power and alarm systems, and fire evacuation routes are operational.

According to Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang, the launching of fireworks, paper lanterns and similar items is prohibited unless permission is granted by the district office.
