The highest point of Doi Inthanon in northern Thailand has become a popular destination for visitors who have come to the mountain to celebrate the New Year

Dozens of tents lined the slopes of the highest mountain peak in the northern Thai province of Chiang Mai, all campsites were booked and almost all local hotels registered guests – a full house at Doi Inthanon National Park began on New Year’s Eve. Hundreds of visitors came to enjoy the fairly cool temperatures and beautiful scenery above the clouds.

Doi Inthanon is 2,565 metres above sea level and is the highest mountain in Thailand and a popular destination for domestic tourism. Nearby mountain attractions such as Doi Suthep Pui National Park, Doi Mon Jaem Mountain and Doi Ang Khand attract nature lovers for solitude and contemplation.

The deputy governor of Chiang Mai province attributed the influx of tourists to security measures on Covid-19 across the country, the appeal of fresh pleasant weather and a New Year’s Eve event with a countdown to midnight organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Hotels, lodges and campsites around the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple reported that they were fully booked, but there was still some room for tents in some outlying camping areas. Traffic was difficult in the national park area as most travellers were families arriving in their own cars, causing significant congestion on the roads leading to the mountains.
