Plane suddenly turns around: flight of more than 16 hours for nothing

Imagine: you are on your way to a holiday destination or flying back home and halfway through the plane returns to the airport of departure. It sounds like a bad joke, but this happened to a group of travelers who flew on an Air New Zealand plane last Thursday.

POWER FAILURE

The Air New Zealand plane landed back at the airport of departure after a flight of 16 hours and 25 minutes. The plane was forced to turn around mid-flight due to a power outage at New York’s JFK International Airport.

“After I had a good night’s sleep, my neighbor tapped me on the shoulder,” passenger Bryan Gottlieb told CNN. “He asked me if I knew we were almost back in Auckland.” Gottlieb could hardly believe it. He’d had a busy few weeks at work and was due to celebrate his brother’s bachelor party in his hometown.

Some international flights were able to land at nearby airports, but flight ANZ2 to New York was reduced to a round trip from Auckland to Auckland. According to the pilot, this decision was made due to a lack of crew at the airport. Most passengers were not amused and preferred to fly to another airport in the United States. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience and understanding ,” the airline told CNN about the situation.
