Police raid a pharmacy in Pattaya for sale of cough syrup, pharmacist was arrested
Pattaya police raided a pharmacy in Banglamung earlier this week after being accused of selling illegal cough syrup to drug users who use the syrup to make local cocktail mixes of illegal drugs.
The raid was led by the deputy. Chief of Police of Nongprue, Khun Eakkarin Sichakoon and Chief Pharmacist of Chonburi Provincial Health Bureau, Khun Jirasan Meerattanaway.
Police arrested the 35-year-old khu. Chitikan Chaiyachettha, aka “Bu” from Sakhon Nakhon. Police confiscated 22 bottles of cough syrup from her.
The arrest follows many complaints from concerned citizens who, out of concern, told Nongprue police that the pharmacy sold cough syrup without a prescription, which is illegal in Thailand. Cough medicines are legal and available without a prescription in many countries, but in the Kingdom of Thailand, they can only be given with a doctor’s prescription.
Cough syrup is one of four ingredients used among local teenagers, according to Nongprue police, to make a cocktail medicine known locally as 4X100 (“See Koon Roi”), Pattaya police said.
Khun Chitikan is accused of selling drugs illegally. She has not issued a statement to a local reporter, and it is not known if she currently has a lawyer.
