Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has defended the decision to delay the reopening of pubs and entertainment venues from Dec. 1 to Jan. 15, a move that has deeply disappointed many in the hospitality and entertainment sectors as they worry about the survival of their business.

Prime Minister Chan-o-cha said public health security measures would not be ready in time for the country to safely reopen on December 1.

“We also need to listen to what the Ministry of Health has to say on the matter,” the prime minister, who is also head of the administrative centre for Covid19 containment, the CCSA, said, which issued the delay notice.

The Prime Minister has on a third-occasion warned the entertainment companies not to reopen until they are authorized to do so or they will face legal action. Many pubs and bars have already broken the rules and suffered the consequences.

Prime Minister Chan-o-cha has also ordered organizers across the country to take the utmost precaution and put in place health surveillance measures during festivities tomorrow during the Loy Krathong celebration.

He said that after the reopening on Nov. 1, tourism has steadily improved, thankfully with an increase in hotel bookings. He said he has instructed agencies to reduce the time it takes to conduct immigration and health checks for international arrivals.

Meanwhile, businesses in Nakhon Ratchasima, one of the most vibrant cities in the northeast, and the coastal city of Pattaya have expressed anger at the delayed return of the city’s nightlife.
