Rescue workers in Bangkok have a deadly shootout

Competing rescue services in Bangkok engaged in a deadly shootout, one person was killed, two wounded

In the Thai capital early Monday morning there was a shootout on Kasemrat Road in the Klong Toei area. During a clash between members of two rival rescue services, one rescue worker was shot dead and two people were injured.

The shooting occurred in front of Lotus’s store around 1 a.m. Dozens of lifeguards briefly blocked the road in hopes of catching the killer. The rescuer who was shot is identified as 25-year-old Chunchana Choteprom of the Poh Teck Tung Foundation.

The foundation repeatedly received false reports of accidents Sunday afternoon. When rescuers once again arrived on a false call, they found only members of a rival rescue service on the scene. Arguments began that escalated into a full-fledged clash between the two groups, said Sombun Kwan-uam, head of the Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescue service.

Sombun blamed the incident on some 70 rescuers who had previously been fired from the foundation for acting in self-interest. The fired rescuers later joined the Siam Ruam Chai Foundation and were assigned to the same area as the Poh Teck Tung rescuers in Klong Toe and Thong Lor.

Jiratthikorn Banjongkit, head of the Poh Teck Tung rescue service, said the foundation apologized for blocking the road, but his staff wanted to force the gunman to surrender. He said his colleagues hit the Siam Ruam Chai Foundation’s car because they were attacked first.

Thong Lor police are investigating the fatal incident.
