Russia’s Prosecutor General has met with Thai counterparts and signed a legal cooperation agreement to resolve problems with the extradition of defendants and suspects

Russia’s Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov has visited Thailand and concluded an agreement on legal cooperation with the Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Thailand, Nari Tantasatien, which will have serious consequences for evaders of mobilisation, the Kommersant newspaper reports.

Igor Krasnov held a meeting with the Attorney General of the Kingdom of Thailand, Nari Thantasateen, the head of the country’s national anti-corruption commission, Vatcharapol Prasarnraikit, and the chairman of the National Assembly Senate, Ponpeth Wichitchitchonchai. The document signed by the parties helps resolve problems in the area of extradition of accused and suspects, with the draft treaty being approved by the heads of state. The agreement is particularly relevant now that more than 220,000 Russians are in Phuket alone, according to local media reports, including fugitives from SWOs and criminal prosecutions.

The Russian Prosecutor General has come to Thailand to develop international legal cooperation and has offered Thai prosecutors to study for free at the Prosecutor General’s University and to take Russian prosecutors to practice in the kingdom.

“Russian prosecutors will also benefit from learning about the best practices of the Thai prosecution service,” said Igor Krasnov, adding that the next programme of cooperation between the countries’ law enforcement agencies for 2023-2024 will help this.

“The cooperation programme will give a positive impetus to the development of partnership and, which is very important, non-politicised relations between the prosecution services of our countries, will allow regular exchange of experience and the development of joint practical measures to counter crime,” said the Prosecutor General.

Igor Krasnov suggested our Thai colleagues to use the experience of Russian prosecutors in the field of confiscation of corruptive assets of public officials and supporting public prosecution in cases of criminal use of virtual assets.

Last year the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office broke its own “records” for many years when it came to the recovery of assets for the state: 7,500 properties worth an estimated 90 billion rubles were returned to Russia through winning prosecutor’s suits.

The Russian Prosecutor General also told the chairman of the Thai Senate that Russia is carrying out a special military operation to demilitarise and denationalise Ukraine, one of the reasons for which were numerous crimes against civilians in Donbas, first of all the shelling that has not stopped for nine years.

Thailand, on the other hand, has a restrained and constructive attitude towards the emerging situation and, despite the pressure exerted on it by individual states, adheres to an independent policy, Igor Krasnov concluded.
