Hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg is the new owner of the Death Row Records label. This is according to a press release from BusinessWire. The rapper launched his own career in 1993 with the label, where he released his acclaimed debut album Doggystyle.

Snoop Dogg has acquired Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group, which is part of the Blackstone Group. The rapper emphasizes how enthusiastic and happy he is with the acquisition. “I am extremely excited and grateful for this opportunity. I get to take over the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records. The label has tremendous future value.”

”It feels good to own the label I was part of at the beginning of my career.” Snoop Dogg reflects on a special moment in his life but also focuses directly on the future with the label. ” I’m looking forward to building the next chapter of Death Row Records.”

Death Row Records was founded in 1991 by Dr Dre, Suge Knight, The DOC and Dick Griffey. The label has been home to some of the greatest West Coast rappers in hip-hop history, including Tupac. Snoop previously discussed his desire to take over Death Row Records in an interview with GQ. He explained that he was rejected as a buyer and then chose to work for the Def Jam label.

That happened a year ago and was also the moment that Death Row Records came into the hands of the Blackstone Group. “That really hurt me as a person, but the businessman in me felt that I would find something else to channel my energy,” Snoop said of the course of events at the time. A year later, The Doggfather still managed to take over the label.
