Students at the American Ponte Vedra High School in the town of Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Florida have pulled a sinister ‘joke’. A group of students hung a dead shark several meters long above a staircase at school. That is what News4jax writes.
The cadaver was taken down Friday morning and taken away. According to a biologist, it is a sandbar shark, one of the larger species of coastal sharks. The police suspect five students of the bizarre ‘joke’ that was intended as a New Year’s Eve stunt. The school management has given the surveillance footage to the police, but will not be made public for the time being.
The St.John’s County School District confirms a shark was found hanging above a staircase at Ponte Vedra High School this morning. They don’t know who put it there. It was cut down and removed. @wjxt4 viewers sent us pics. A student I spoke with says it was a senior prank. #PVHS pic.twitter.com/prXhToXdtV

The stunt is probably not without consequences. A local lawyer tells News4jax that the person responsible could be charged with a range of violations. A Florida fish and wildlife conservation commissioner confirm that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Students tell the news site that they are quite shocked by the joke. “It was pretty gruesome. And it’s a pretty big shark,” says one student. Another student talks about the horrific stench. “I was shocked. You don’t expect something like that in the morning.”
