The world’s longest-serving prime minister has decided to change his official date of birth so as not to cause conflict with the Chinese zodiac calendar

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said he has decided to change his official date of birth to the day he was actually born, despite using the wrong day for decades, the Khmer Times reported.

Hun Sen said he made the decision after his older brother died on May 5, which he suspects may have something to do with the fact that his brother and sister also had the wrong date of birth and this caused a conflict with the Chinese zodiac calendar.

Many Cambodians aged 50 and older have two birthdays because they lost their official birth certificates during the Khmer Rouge regime years from 1975 to 1979. In addition, many people gave wrong birthdates to avoid being drafted into the army during the Khmer Rouge struggle in the 1980s.

Hun Sen stated that he had two birthdates: April 4, 1951, and August 5, 1952, the latter of which he says is correct. The prime minister claims that an administrative error is to blame for using the wrong date of birth.

Hun Sen said his brother died of a heart attack 10 days after returning from Singapore, where he was receiving treatment. According to the Cambodian prime minister, the zodiac is something that “should not be ignored,” referring to the fact that his older brother also got his date of birth wrong, moving it from the year of the cow to the year of the tiger.

Changing the date of birth will entail certain complications, as both domestic legal, and diplomatic issues need to be resolved, Hun Sen acknowledged.

Hun Sen, 69, became prime minister of Cambodia on January 14, 1985, and is currently considered the world’s longest-serving prime minister, having been in power continuously for 37 years.
