Suspicious woman released after panic about needles in Australia strawberries
A woman who was tried in Australia for the notorious discovery of needles in strawberries has been released. Australian media report that charges against the former employee of a fruit farm have been dropped.
Suspect My Ut Trinh (53) risked a prison sentence of ten years. Authorities arrested her after needles were discovered in strawberries sold in supermarkets in 2018. This led to unrest and major economic damage to the fruit sector.
Strawberries had to be withdrawn from the market and entire batches were thrown away.
Justice explained that it no longer counts on a conviction. Therefore, prosecutors decided to drop the case. Police had previously said that the woman’s DNA had been found on a needle. According to the authorities, she also said to a colleague that she wanted to put a needle in fruit to make her employer go bankrupt.
My Ut Trinh’s lawyer called the end of the prosecution “a huge relief.” He said his client sees that as reparation. Friends say that the woman has had a difficult period and can finally move on with her life. She would especially look forward to visiting her 96-year-old mother in Vietnam.
